ALS Research Innovation Program
ALS Northwest has always believed in the power of funding science and research at every stage, from the earliest discoveries at the lab bench to the clinical trials that pave the way for breakthrough treatments. When the opportunity arose to support the second year of the ALS Network’s innovative research program, ALS Northwest knew it was a moment to act. This investment is more than just a commitment to scientific advancement — it’s a commitment to hope. Hope for those currently living with ALS, and for those who may face a diagnosis in the future. By funding bold ideas and rigorous science, we help accelerate the path toward effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure.
After learning about the ALS Network’s rigorous and forward-thinking grant program, it was clear that we didn’t need to look far to find a great partner just south of our own region. We are proud to invest in this program and look forward to the discoveries and progress it will bring.
Learn more about the ALS Research Innovation Program below.
ALS Northwest and the ALS Network, along with ten other ALS United member organizations, have partnered to launch an initiative to directly fund cutting-edge research.
The ALS research initiative provides innovation grants to fund novel yet scientifically rigorous ideas that can transform our understanding of ALS and move the field forward exponentially. Our seed funding to establish proof of concept for new scientific approaches potentially positions these visionary projects for larger scale funding in the future. In addition, our nimble “pitch session” approach to vet unique projects accelerates the application process, moving promising science forward faster.
ALS Research Innovation Grants are awarded through a competitive application process that opens in spring. Up to $150,000 (including up to 15% indirect costs) may be awarded per project, and the total number of awards is at the discretion of the ALS Network. Eligible applicants may represent university, non-profit, or for-profit entities; we are seeking the best ideas, regardless of affiliation. Projects should be bold, imaginative, and lead to advances in the field. At this time, only U.S.-based projects are eligible for funding.
Emerging Research Themes:
- Molecular Mechanisms & Pathophysiology
- Biomarkers & Diagnostics
- Therapeutics & Drug Discovery
- Models & Platforms
Our Approach:
- Strategic investment of funds with Scientific Advisory Committee review and oversight, informed by input from the Community Research Committee, a group of people with lived ALS experience. Fuel moonshots; power an efficient, collaborative research framework designed to de-risk investment and accelerate the search for effective prevention strategies, treatments, and cures for ALS.
- Strategic collaborations with mission aligned individuals and entities. Stakeholders include scientists, corporate partners, academic institutions, nonprofit organizations, and others.
- Strategic partnership with an inclusive, diverse, informed and engaged community- including people diagnosed with ALS, caregivers, and family members.
