Chris Cate: Shredding Slopes, Breaking Barriers, and Elevating ALS Support!

Chris Cate is a dedicated supporter of ALS Northwest and a longstanding participant in the annual Ski ALS event at Mt. Hood Meadows. He has a strong passion for fundraising, and a life-long commitment to finding a cure for ALS. 

Chris, at 57 years old, has been a resident of the area all his life. He runs a power washing business and has been happily married for 30 years. Family is everything to him, including his two dogs who accompany him on all his adventures. From camping, fishing or hiking, Chris embraces life in every way. 

Chris’ connection with ALS dates back to 2009 when he reconnected with an old high school friend – Mike Lopez Jr., who was diagnosed with ALS in the mid-’90s and sadly passed away in 2013. Mike’s story deeply impacted Chris, leading him to actively participate in different ALS events, raising money for research to find a cure. Chris has been an integral part of ALS fundraisers, organizing alumni get-togethers, golf events, and even two skydiving fundraisers that were all huge successes. 

For Chris, fundraising is extremely important, raising over $100,000 since becoming involved in ALS fundraisers in 2009. He recommends reaching out personally, either through email, the messenger on your personal fundraising page, or through your favorite social media platform. Before you reach out, be sure to update and personalize your fundraising page with photos and your connection to ALS. Most importantly, don’t forget to follow up (more than once)! With over 100 donors and counting, Chris emphasizes the power of consistency and not being afraid to ask for support, especially when it’s for a great cause. When you register and fundraise for the Ski ALS, you directly help those living with ALS and their loved ones in the area with the important care they need as well as funding research for better treatments and a cure.
