Living Well with ALS: Karolyn Dibetta

Karolyn Dibetta lives on a peaceful, hilltop property spanning 14 acres in the small town of Merlin, Oregon (near Medford). Recently diagnosed with ALS, Karolyn is navigating this journey with resilience and a focus on enjoying each day with support from ALS Northwest.

Before retiring, Karolyn spent 45 years dedicated to her craft as a hairdresser. She now spends much of her time with family, who she considers to be the heart of her life as well as a steadfast source of support throughout her journey with ALS. She is a mother of three, a grandmother and a great-grandmother.

Karolyn is especially close with her sister Darlene, who is affectionately known as “Boots” and now acts as her caregiver. Together, they have shared many incredible adventures, including trips to Europe. Karolyn and Darlene even raised their children together, creating a unique bond that kept their families closely connected. The sisters recently found community with other families impacted by ALS at ALS Northwest’s annual Southern Oregon Family Fun Day

Care Services Coordinator Laura Geilenfeldt ensures Karolyn has the resources she needs to navigate daily life with ALS. From providing resources on exercising with ALS to traveling as a wheelchair user, Laura is there every step of the way to help Karolyn live her best life.

Though ALS brings regular challenges, Karolyn continues to adapt and cherish the things that bring her happiness. She faces each day with courage, finding ways to embrace life with the same love and dedication she’s always shown.
