OHSU Brain-Computer Interface Research Study: Recruiting Participants

Dr. Melanie Fried-Oken is researching ways to help people with severe disabilities use brain-computer interface (BCI) technology to communicate. When using the BCI, people wear an electrode cap (like a swim cap) that can measure changes in their brainwaves which may be used to type letters on a computer.

Participants are needed to test new developments of our BCI system.
You may be eligible to participate in this study if you:
– Are 18 to 89 years of age
– Can see words on a computer screen
– Can read and communicate in English
– Have a diagnosis that causes severe speech and/or motor impairment. Examples include amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple systems atrophy, spinal muscular atrophy, brainstem stroke, or spinal cord injury.

Participation will require at least 4 visits. Visits can take place at your home or at OHSU (in Portland, Oregon). Each visit will last for up to 3 hours. You will receive a $25 gift card for each visit. *The ideal candidate would live within 50 miles of Portland*
